History:
Brig was mentioned for the first time in history in 1215 as "briva", this means "bridge". In the 17th century Kaspar Stockalper earned a lot of money with the Simplon-street, so he could build the Stockalper castle. Because Napolean (1801-1805) expanded the Simplon-street for his artillery, the street could afterwards also be used for the post coaches.
Actual:
The town has about 12000 inhabitants. The cities Brig, Glis and Brigerbad joined to one community (Brig-Glis) in 1973.
Interesting:
The Simplon tunnel, which is almost 20 kilometers long, was opened in 1906 and was for a long time the longest train tunnel of the world.
