History:
Since the Middle Ages until about 1860, was the most famous cheese Engelberger: the Sbrinz, a good deal for the Benedictine monastery. The cheese was exported especially in Valais, Ticino and Lombardy. Tourism started slowly since the first ascent of the Titlis in 1744.
Actual:
The town has about 4000 inhabitants.
Interesting:
The Lord Stockalper from Valais (Brig), he exchanged in 1666 already 1,000 liters of wine for 1400 pound Engelberger cheese. The Titlis mountain probably owes its name to its shape, resembling a female breast (old word: tüttels).
