During the roman time, the centre of Locarno was in Muralto (close to the central train station). In 1502 the Swiss armee attact Locarno with an armee of 18000 soldiers, but they could not concer the castle. With the peace-treaty of Freiburg with the french in 1516, Locarno was assigned to the Swiss. The Swiss then dismantle the castle in 1518. With the Locarno-treaty in 1925, Locarno was in the political spotlight.
The town has about 15000 inhabitants. Every summer the film festival of Locarno is organised.
The name Locarno is probably from the celtic word Leukara, this means "the white". In 1555 the reformed families Orellis and Muralti fled to Zürich.
