History:
When the Romans defeated the Kelten in Wallis (15 bc), the settlement Sedunum (Sion) was built. Sion became in 580 the home of the bishop. The church and the state were from 999 for many years not devided, because the bishop (who lived in the castle of Valeria until 1798) was also the duke of Wallis. Until 1400 there were a lot of fights between the bishop / the family von Turn / the Duke of Savoyen / the upper Zehnden (villages).
Actual:
The town has about 30000 inhabitants and is the capital of canton Wallis.
Interesting:
Sion is the oldest city of Switzerland. One of the oldest playable organs of the world (+/- 1400) is in the castle-church of the castle Valeria.
