History:
Wil was founded around 1200 by the duke of Toggenburg, but it burned down completely in 1292 as retaliation and was build again 8 years later in 1300. In 1585 the number of inhabitants is 4000, 50 years later it is 2000, because of the pest and Famine. The first Swiss armee is founded in Wil in 1647 (Berne, Basel and Zürich could not agree with each other) because of the threat by the swedisch armee which arrived at the bodensee.
Actual:
The town has about 17000 inhabitants.
Interesting:
The 'Steckliträgen' (stick-carry) in the autumn is a 400 year old tradition after the last exercise of the city-defenders. The school youth is carring sticks, with gifts attached to if.
